Submission Guidelines

The Willamette Writer considers submissions on writing, especially "how-to" articles on craft and genre. We are not interested in essays, poetry or fiction of any type. Word count should be between 250-1200 words: Shorter pieces get used faster. Articles over 1500 words will be rejected. We do not buy poetry or fiction. Payment is 6 cents a word for first rights; 1 cent a word for reprints, U.S. dollars. Payment is upon publication.

E-mail submissions (which are preferred) should be single-spaced, in Times New Roman 12 point font, with double spacing between paragraphs. Please, no tabs, formatting, or page numbering. Sidebar information should be noted as such at the bottom of regular text. Hard copy submissions should be double-spaced and a SASE included for reply. Please include a short bio and accurate word count. Authors retain copyright. Submissions may be edited for length, clarity and appropriateness. Deadlines are the first of each month.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND MORE THAN ONE SUBMISSION AT A TIME. One submission per person/per month, or they will be rejected, unopened.

Member news announcements should be 50 words or under.

Workshops and other literary event announcements should be 150 words or less. PLEASE DO NOT FORMAT, especially DO NOT use 'bullets' or 'cells' or they will be rejected. DO NOT send Press Release type announcements where wording and formatting has to be removed. Please just paste the announcement as text into the body of the email.

Submit e-mail submissions to: willamettewritereditor@yahoo.com and identify your submission as 'Submission to The Willamette Writer.' E-mail submissions with no subject line, or not identified properly, will be deleted, unopened. By mail, send to: The Editor, Willamette Writers, 9045 SW Barbur Blvd., Suite 5A, Portland, OR 97219.

Email Announcement Guidelines

The purpose of the WW email lists are to promote Willamette Writers and help members promote their work.

The email list is NOT a free PR service for other organizations.

Follow the same guidelines for announcements for the email lists. Email announcements go out one time only to the appropriate list (Portland events to the Portland list, etc.)

Announcements for the email lists that have meeting times/dates that conflict with Willamette Writers meetings, writing contests that conflict with the Kay Snow writing contest, or workshops or writing conferences that happen after WW conference registration opens, will be rejected.

Members can announce one workshop per month, one time only. Workshops are announced to the area they are happening, i.e., a coast workshop is announced on the coast email list. Out of state workshop notices are rejected.

Workshop announcements must state the cost of the workshop and meeting times. Workshop notices that request a link to a website must link to an up-to-date website. If there's no mention of the workshop on the website, the announcement will not go out.

Members doing online classes will get one announcement to one list.

Books can have one pre-publication announcement and one publication announcement. Announcements about book reviews can be submitted as member news, with a 75 word limit, and can include a link to the review.

Events that feature several WW members will get one announcement only.

PDF announcements are deleted unopened. All notices should be in the body of an email.

Any photos submitted should include a photographer credit.

Send email announcements to wilwrite@willamettewriters.com

Non-Willamette Writers announcements run only if they are of general interest to writers, time permitting. Submitting an announcement to the WW office doesn't guarantee it will run. Absolutely no business notices, non-writing workshops or events, or notices about rentals, house-sitting, etc. The Soapstone email list charges $25 to run such announcements, for writers who want another avenue to advertise.

The WW email lists are not a free PR service; it is not a List Serv. Announcements that need editing (two page press releases, web links with no text about an announcement) require a $25 donation to Willamette Writers Books for Kids program. Out of state, non-member press releases are deleted unread.
